Her research on the early sweater is a bit shaky, and some is completly wrong. (Her dates on the earliest sweater from Jeremina Colvin are way off for example)
A much better book is
Working with Wool: A Coast Salish Legacy and the Cowichan Sweater by Syliva Olsen.
It is fairly new, and well researched.Barb Brownhttp://www.wildgeesefibres.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28855752.post-74886225691259216652010-07-09T04:35:08.278-04:002010-07-09T04:35:08.278-04:00Thank you for your interesting review on Gossamer ...Thank you for your interesting review on Gossamer Webs books. Though i am not a fan of Ghalina as a teacher - i think her book is quite impressive, on both history and technique - it just gave me more of an excuse to want to learn the russian language and more about the history. Immediately. I've never read any Richard Rutt and now I'm very interested in reading that book just to see how I react.

Also, it's so sad to me that I didn't knit in college (except for maybe one sad little baby blanket). I took a class taught by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich and didn't get how crazy brilliant she is until after I'd been out of school for a few years. Alas. Now I just have to read her books like everyone else.Sway Knitshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11763532722078229356noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28855752.post-5542639344130454862007-09-03T21:00:00.000-04:002007-09-03T21:00:00.000-04:00Excellent!Thanks for sharing your rant (and raves)...Excellent!

Thanks for sharing your rant (and raves) with us.

I'll get back to posting this week. And I've got a seething ...I'm an amateur historian. And I've got a seething disgust going for Richard Rutt, due mostly to his theories (Eurocentric BS, more like) on the origins of knitting. Even though all the earliest exampls of knitting have ARABIC KNIT INTO THEM, even though the archeological record is on the spot, he claims 'there is no real evidence to show Arabs invented knitting'. ARGH! AAAAH! RRRRRGH!

...anyway, about Orenburg vs. Shetland lace. Having studied a good bit about the origins of knitting, which I am pretty sure were in Egypt or a surrounding area, I think knitting spread to Europe in two paths. One, the obvious and well-known one, through Moorish/Arab Spain and up into Western Europe. Two, the 'back door', up through the Bosporus and the Black Sea and into Eastern Europe. The one path produced Shetland lace (among others). The other path produced Orenburg lace. I think that Orenburg lace technique is unusual enough (the way they put on edges, for starters), that an argument can be made for it as an idea independent of the W Europe traditions.

Someone needs to write another book. A good one. Should we play rock-paper-scissors to see who does it, or hold a drawing?Juliehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11710658334966849773noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28855752.post-88390176910528692652007-09-01T10:51:00.000-04:002007-09-01T10:51:00.000-04:00Oh wow Kate, awesome reviews.
